Summer at Limón
Who needs a beach along the Riviera when you can enjoy the tropical climes of a dance studio? This summer, we have ongoing classes at two NYC locations, a workshop led by master teacher Risa Steinberg, and two intensive programs on opposite sides of the country.

NYC

You can study Limón all summer! We offer an ongoing schedule of open classes in all levels at the Limón Institute and Peridance Center. For a complete calendar- GO>>

If you are interested in an intensive exploration of Limón Technique and repertory, join Risa Steinberg for her 2-week workshop in Limón Technique, Repertory, and Teaching Methodology (July 28 – August 8). For more information and an application - GO>>

East & West Coast Programs

The Company, led by Artistic Director Carla Maxwell, offers an intensive 3- week residency (June 30 – July 18) at SUNY Brockport, NY. The schedule immerses students in Limón Technique, repertory, and style, and features the Mentoring Program, which pairs each participant with a Company member.

In California, four Limón master teachers lead a 2-week program (July 13 – 25) at Mills College in Oakland. José Limón created what he considered his first major work, Danzas Mexicanas, while teaching at Mills in 1939. This summer, a repertory class will re-construct this lost solo, working from fragments of silent films and Limón’s own extensive notes. For more information and an application - GO>>

NYC Performances
The Company at the Joyce Theater

There are not many troupes capable of presenting the kind of program that the Limón Dance Company brought to the Joyce... More than 30 years after the death of José Limón, the Company… remains both a living link to the history of dance and a vibrant spur to its future (Newsday, 5/3/03).

We are always pleased when critics recognize the exceptional nature of the Company and its repertory. Finding a balance between works by contemporary choreographers and founders Limón and Humphrey is not easy, but it yields tremendous rewards: it creates a challenging repertory for the dancers, opportunities for contemporary choreographers, and unequaled experiences for you, our audience. The Company’s success as modern dance repertory company is largely due to Carla Maxwell, who celebrated her 25th anniversary as Artistic Director this season. A gifted leader, rehearsal director, and teacher, she is also an accomplished choreographer. Two of Maxwell’s projects were shown at the Joyce: Etude, a tribute to Limón, and Psalm, a re-working of Limón’s original choreography set to a commissioned score from Jon Magnussen. Both works received critical praise, as did new dances by rising young choreographers Adam Hougland and Jonathan Riedel. Of course, these dances shone because of the Company’s remarkable artists, who gave inspiring performances and illustrated the timelessness of the Limón tradition.

You are looking at our new website, created by Oberlander Design, which has been a year in the making. From our oh-so-unbiased perspective, the site is pretty impressive, not only because of its visual impact, but because of all the information it contains. You’ll find descriptions of the Company’s current repertory, dancer biographies, information on summer workshops and year-round study at Limón, and of course, we’ve posted the Institute’s class schedule! You can also become a Friend of Limón by making a secure donation, or shop online. If you haven’t already registered to receive the newsletter, class schedule, and other updates via email, sign up now >> we want to keep in touch with you!
