We are thrilled to announce the Limón Dance Company's upcoming season at the Joyce Theater, September 21-October 3, 2004.  With two different programs, there is something for everyone, including the world premiere of Extreme Beauty by Susanne Linke and the Limón Dance Company's premiere of Lar Lubovitch's masterwork Concerto Six Twenty-Two.  The program will also feature classic Limón works including Psalm, Chaconne, and The Unsung.  On September 22, there will be a pre-performance reception benefitting the Company:  A Celebration of Extreme Beauty.  We will also offer a humanities program on September 29 in which the audience will have the chance to discuss the works performed with Artistic Director, Carla Maxwell.

In addition to the performances at the Joyce, the Company will have a showing at SUNY-Purchase on September 3 at 5 pm.  The Company will also be one of the featured dance companies at the 9-11 Tribute Performance at Battery Park on the evening of September 11.  If you are in the New York area, we hope you will be able to attend one of these many great performances.   GO! >>

Remembering Carlos Orta

1944-2004

The Limón Dance Foundation recently lost a close member of its family, Carlos Orta.  Carlos passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 15, across the street from the Limón studio where he had just finished rehearsal with some Limón students.

Mr. Orta began dancing with the Limón Dance Company in 1979 and was featured in many principle roles, including the Moor in The Moor's Pavane.  In addition to performing with the Limon Company, Carlos performed with the Folkwang Ballet, the Tanztheater Wuppertal and the Cologne Tanz Forum.  He choreographed for numerous companies around the world.  Mr. Orta founded his own Comopany, Coreoarte in his native country of Venezuela in 1983.  The International Academy of Dance in Cologne awarded Orta the Audience Prize in 1975 and the Jury Prize in 1976 for his choreography.  In 1985, the Venezuelan government honored Orta with its highest artistic recognition, the Prize of Dance.

In addition to his honors choreographing and performing, Carlos was a beloved teacher at the Limón Institute.  Carla Maxwell remembers, "Wherever he went, he brough joy an dlove, and fostered an atmosphere of opennes, curiosity and creativity.  His gifts will remain in our hearts."  The Limón Company's upcoming performances at the Joyce Theater carry dedication to the wonderful life of our friend and teacher, Carlos Orta.
