Programs of Study
The Limón
Institute has essentially six different programs of study.
1 Professional Studies Program - PSP 9 month
2 Intermediate Studies Program - ISP 9 month
3 Fall Intensive Studies Program - FISP 3 month
4 Limón / Peridance Visa Student Program - Visa 12
month
5 Choreography Intensives
6 Dance Training and Arts Management Internship Program
NOTE: International
students who need a student visa must attend the Limón-Peridance
Visa Student program. This may be done in conjunction with
one of the other courses. Otherwise international students
may attend the Fall Intensive Studies Program for 90 days on a
tourist visa.
Professional
Studies Program (PSP)
The
PSP program is an intensive, nine-month
course of study designed to train and educate dancers in the traditions
of the Limón Dance Company’s founders, this program
combines daily classes in Limón Technique, special workshops
and lectures to impart a definitive version of the Limón/Humphrey
heritage, coaching and mentoring sessions, special theory and practice
sessions, performance opportunities, open rehearsals and tickets
to company performances. The program offers qualified
applicants an integrated learning experience focused on their artistic
development. The faculty includes former and current members of
the Company and notable artists in the dance field. Students study
with artists who worked with José Limón, are able
to take class with Company members and do research in the Foundation’s
archives. Informal showings are held at the conclusion of the winter
and spring semesters, and Institute Studio Showings provide students
with additional choreographic and performance opportunities. At
the end of the program, full-time students receive a certificate
of completion.
Intermediate
Studies Program (ISP)
The
ISP program is designed
to offer a course of regular, sustained study in the Limón
legacy. Its aim is to develop a strong technical base and
a familiarity with the movement style and vocabulary. The
program starts with a workshop that introduces principles of the
Limón technique and also includes some repertory workshops
and special sessions, (but fewer than the PSP and these are also
geared to a slightly less advanced level) performance opportunityies,
open rehearsals, and tickets to company performances. This
is also a nine month program from September through May. Prior
dance training is required, though not necessarily in the Limón
style. Students interested in ISP should submit the same forms
and follow the same application and audition procedures as for the
Professional Studies Program, but will be placed in the program
which is appropriate to their level.
Fall
Intensive Studies Program (FISP)
FISP is a three-month intensive
studies program beginning September
10, 2007. This program is designed for college dance majors who want
the experience of a semester in New York City, and for international
students whose visas limit them to 3 months of study. The
program starts with a workshop that introduces principles of Limón
technique, and consists of daily technique classes, repertory workshops,
special theory and practice sessions, a performance opportunity,
open rehearsals, and tickets to company performances. Applicant
should be at the Advanced or Intermediate-Advanced level and have
completed the equivalent of two years of college.
PSP/Visa -
is essentially a combination of the PSP and Visa programs, and may
be done in a 9 month or a 12 month version.
ISP/Visa -
is essentally a combination of the ISP and Visa programs, and also
may be taken in a 9 month or 12 month version.
Choreography Intensives Program
This program consists of three twelve-week workshops, each with a. particular focus. The daily sessions will examine choreographic process through exploratory laboratories, a craft practicum, and work-in-progress showings. Each participant will also develop an individual choreographic project which will be to an invited audience in a final informal showing. The faculty includes Ann Vachon, Alan Danielson, Jim May and Sue Bernhard.
Dance Training and Arts Management Internship Program
The Dance Training & Arts Management Internship Program accepts up to three qualified students a year to participate in rotating three-month internships in areas such as development, administration, production, archives, budget and finance, under the mentorship of the Limón Dance Company’s professional staff. In addition to fifteen hours a week of the internship, participants design individual programs of studio work. Applicants should be college graduates with previous office experience and a specific interest in dance management. Tuition for this highly competitive program is fully subsidized.
