*Limón Technique and Repertory classes form the heart of this workshop curriculum.
Limón Technique Company
Limón Technique provides rigorous training and features the use of breath, weight, opposition, isolation, succession, musicality and expressive gesture.
Limón Repertory I, II and III Company
Repertory classes will teach excerpts from different classic Limón works, with an emphasis on performance quality, style, and musicality. One of these repertory classes is required to complete your curriculum. There are no level differences between these classes!
Duet & Solo Repertory - Carla Maxwell
This course will teach solos and duets from the Humphrey/Limon repertory. Dancers will hone their performance skills while exploring the use of space, gesture, music and the dynamics of the body language in order to develop character and intention.
"Dancers are musicians are dancers" and New Rep
A. "Dancers are musicians are dancers" - Kurt Douglas
This new course will explore the dynamic collaboration between music and dance as partners. Students will have the unique opportunity to compare, contrast and analyze the works of several composers as they were perceived and used in José Limón's choreography. Students will apply their new discoveries in the studio while learning excerpts of Limón's choreography as related to the musical compositions studied.
B. New Rep: Jonathan Fredrickson
This course is offered as a complement to "Dancers are musicians are dancers". In continuation of the exploration of music in relation to dance, a new work will be created for the students by company member and choreographer Jonathan Fredrickson.
Composition Kathryn Alter
This class will be an exploration of the development of ideas into movement and choreographic structures. We will work with various resources for inspiration, including-course work from Doris Humphrey’s The Art of Making Dances, elements from the work of José Limón, improvisation, current events, and the surroundings at Brockport. Through observation, action, articulation, and communication each participant will be both student and teacher.
Elements of Style Carla Maxwell
These sessions will bring the entire workshop community together as we focus on the specific movement principles and elements of style that make the Limón/Humphrey technique so rich and varied.
A major focus of this residency will be to help students discover ways to work on their own to reach their fullest potential. Conferences and mentoring sessions with company members and teachers will be scheduled on individual basis upon request.
